After the holidays we are back again with another Valeo technical evening. This time we take a look under the hood of Drive-by-Wire (DbW) technology, the concept of which was developed in the aviation industry, where it is known as Fly-by-Wire (FbW).
As a first speaker will be doc. Ing. Tomáš Hanis, Ph.D. from the FEL ČVUT, who briefly summarizes the following: The Drive-by-Wire initiative marks a significant advancement for the automotive industry as it embraces future technologies. The evolution of drive-by-wire technology stands as a narrative in the progression of automobiles – an engineering marvel with a global footprint. The 20th century was characterized by a meticulous focus on mechanical design in areas spanning chassis, powertrain, drivetrain, aerodynamics, tires, and passenger cabin ergonomics.
The 21st century, however, heralds a shift toward software development, mechatronics, and advanced vehicular automation. The drive-by-wire approach draws inspiration from aerospace principles and breakthroughs, positioning itself as a pivotal enabler for the ongoing evolution of road mobility. With the contemporary automotive landscape boasting an exponential increase in software components’ numbers and complexity, it becomes imperative to engage in discourse concerning holistic system-level concepts that foster heightened integration and overall performance.
Another presenter and expert in this field is Ing. Tomáš Nouza, who will introduce you to how we deal with the principles of autonomous driving at Valeo. Tomas will answer questions such as: What is Drive-by-Wire and what does it mean for Valeo? How to make a DbW car? How do we ensure safety of driving DbW cars on public roads and how do we do it in Valeo?
The last and no less important presenter is MSc. Ondřej Karas from Honeywell company, who will focus on FbW. The Compact Fly-By-Wire ensures all possible failures on passivated and redundant channels are able to seamlessly transfer control without disturbing aircraft control or relying on pilot heroics to recover the aircraft. The system also can provide envelope limiting, which controls the aircraft within a safe operating envelope even if a pilot becomes disoriented. This is ideal for creating a stabilized flying experience for unmanned vehicles.
MSc. Ondřej Karas will bring the presentation “Multivariable Aircraft Control Through Dynamic Inversion”. This presentation includes subtopics such as:
Definition of controlled variables and effectors
Feedback design objectives
Desired dynamics
On-board aircraft model
Non-linear dynamic inversion
